This is yes the 8th in the series and is as close to a "reinvention" of the series as you can get. Its still about skating and it still has Tony in it, but just about everything else is either new or looks damn new. Obviously the first thing that you see is that the graphics are WAAAY better than the last games. Everything in the game is very detailed... very detailed. The boards look spectacular and the clothes and skaters look pretty damn realistic.
What you can't see from the screen shot is the newest feature of the game, called "Nail-The-Trick". That is were if you are in the air doing a trick you can "click" both of the analog sticks and the game slows down and focuses on the skaters feet. Why... because each of the analog sticks control each foot independently. Meaning you can push one way on the left stick and get a Kickflip, or you can push one way on the right stick and do a Shove-It. It takes a little getting used to at first but once you get the hang of it, you will be pulling off seamless tricks that you never saw so good before.
Also you now can play some random mini games by throwing your skater after he bails (a-la Flatout) like bowling and going for distance. Not that its all that new or genius but it does up the replay value a little.
All in all i wouls say its at the least worth a rent and if you are a fan a good buy.
